Good Governance Group comprising Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has commended the developmental strides of the Chairman of Awgu Local Government area, Mr. Pedro Okwudili Nwankwo.
They gave the commendation during the ongoing Good Governance Tour to ascertain the level of development in the seventeen Council areas of the State.
The group led by the leaders of the unions, including comrade Fabian Nwigbo of NLC, Samuel Udekwe of NUJ and Onyebuchi Igboke of CSO after touring the sites of some of the projects executed by the council chairman said he is one of the best in the State and urged Communities to protect the projects to serve its purposes.
They said that the essence of the visit was to awaken the zeal of other council chairmen in the State to better the lots of the people.
They equally noted that the aim was not to witch-hunt anybody but to bring to limelight the activities of the council Chairmen.
While commending the council chairman of Awgu for touching the lives of the people through some of the projects despite the challenges confronting the nation, they equally urged him to do more.
Taking the group around, the council Chairman of Awgu Local government, Mr. Pedro Nwankwo who thanked the group for the initiative, said that it would spur him to embark on more life changing projects.
Some of the projects executed by him, include new administrative block under construction, ICT center in the council headquarters, 1.6 kilometre fencing at NYSC camp Awgu, Governor Peter Mbah’s lodge at completion level, 1.4 kilometers alsphalted road, and 2 kilometers drainage road at Onooli – Obuovia, remodeling of Olie Awgu market, 6 class room blocks with head teacher’s offices in various primary schools in the area, while 3 were completed, 3 are ongoing, 2 kilometers earthwork done at Uhuokpala and Obinagu Umuagwu road in Imama Amoli Community.
Other projects are: construction of 2 culverts at Mgbidi-Nkwe-Ezere road, over 12 other culverts constructed, commissioned Rural electrification project that serves communities in Awgu South, Nkwe customary court, ongoing construction of Ugbo health Center, Provision of Solar refrigerator and Solar lights in all the health centers and renovation of Ogbaku Health Center and other interventions.
The Chairman also have to his credit, the reconstruction of two rooms flat at Awgu Police Division Barracks, purchase of security gadgets, 30 security Motorbikes, 2 Hilux vans and 2 Sienna buses for security purposes.
Workers at the Council area also testified to the group of having a good working relationship with the Council Chairman including prompt payment of their allowances and salaries.
