Also two persons, John Ede and his daughter were abducted at Umueje, Ikem-Etiti on Monday morning while they were working in their farm.
On Sunday night, the bandits abducted Benedicta Abonyi at her home in Ikem-Uno, behind Ikem General Hospital, but due to intense gun battle between a combined team of security operatives and the kidnappers, she was able to escape.
It was learnt that the slain Anglican catechist was attacked while he was in the farm with his son on Monday morning. While his son escaped with a gunshot wound on his leg, the Catchiest died on the spot.
The lucky son of the catchist is currently receiving treatment in a private hospital together with Benedicta Abonyi who had earlier escaped on Sunday night.
An eyewitness who narrated how the incident unfolded said that it was a young girl whose motorcycle was snatched by the kidnappers that pointed to security operatives the path through which the kidnappers escaped.
He said: “She was the one that told us the road they followed and that was how we recovered the corpse of the catechist. The woman who escaped from them on Sunday night said they were seven in number. She is the one who identified them as Fulani.
“The woman escaped because they were shooting and we were returning with our own shooting. So the kidnappers thought we were closing in on them and they released the woman and ran away.”
The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe failed to confirm the incident in a message sent to him via his mobile phone.
