Central Washington College matriculates 225 new students

The Central Washington Collage of Nursing Sciences (CWC) Enugu, has matriculated a total of 225 new students for the 2023/2024 academic session.

The President and Founder of the institution, Prof. Augustine Akubue while addressing the matriculating students on Saturday, said that they should count themselves privileged to have been admitted into the institution as they were selected from a pool of 1350 applicants.

Akubue who said that the school was established to address issues of brain drain and the decay in the education sector especially in the area of nursing and health sciences, added that from next session, students would be admitted through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Speaking on the effects of brain drain in the health sector, Akubue said that, “This is made worse by the incessant industrial crisis between the Government and academics/professionals in tertiary institutions which portend great danger to the society.

“Furthermore, available statistics show that in the face of increasing number of Nigerians seeking tertiary education in the last decade, only about 42% of them could gain such admissions. The implication is that Nigeria as a developing country cannot meet the demand of her citizens for higher education.

“This is very unfortunate because of the four indicators applied in measuring the Human Development Index (HDI) of any nation, mean years of schooling and expected years of schooling are the first two variables for consideration. It is, therefore, not surprising that the HDI of Nigeria ranks less than the global average.

“It was against the above backdrop that the Central Washington College (CWC) was birthed as an umbrella College of Nursing and Health Sciences and Technology which is committed to adding value to our educational system through purposeful contributions that would build a coterie of health force with specialized skills in line with global practices.

On his part, the Senator, representing Enugu North Senatorial Zone, Chief Okey Ezea expressed delight in the trajectory of the institution, encouraging the students to be dedicated to their studies.

“I commend the young man for his entrepreneurship and innovation in trying to build a school for our people who for one reason or the other, the government has not been able to provide them opportunity to get educated.

“My advise to the students is for them to take whatever they are doing seriously. It is not just enough to be admitted into a university, you have to pass and pass in flying colours.”
