The Young Progressives Party (YPP) councillorship candidates in the controversial Anambra Local Government election held last September across the ten wards in Nnewi North LGA have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The group also declared their support for Sir Paul Chukwuma in the upcoming APC governorship primary election on April 6 and the general election on November 8, 2025.
The former YPP members who defected to the APC include Hon. Amobi Okonkwo, the YPP candidate for Otolo Nnewi Ward 1 and a Senior Special Assistant to Senator Ifeanyi Ubah on Persons with Special Needs; Hon. Chigbo Uzor, YPP Secretary in Nnewi North LGA and the party’s councillorship candidate for Otolo Nnewi Ward 2; and Hon. Ugochukwu Ofodile, the YPP candidate for Otolo Nnewi Ward 3.
Others include Hon. Izuchukwu John Uzochukwu, former Chief Security Officer to Senator Ifeanyi Ubah and YPP councillorship candidate for Uruagu Nnewi Ward 1. Hon. Nonso Ojukwu and Hon. Chidiebere Esione, former candidates for Uruagu Wards 2 and 3, respectively, also joined the APC.
For Nnewichi Nnewi Wards 1 and 2, Hon. Uzochukwu Chukwuma and Hon. Okanume Onyeka defected, while Hon. Ifenna Jinwa and Hon. Stanley Okeke, former candidates for Umudim Nnewi Wards 1 and 2, were also received into the APC from YPP.
In a joint statement after their formal admission into the APC, the councillorship candidates said their decision was based on Mr. Chukwuma’s “unbeatable capacity” and his suitability for the position, adding that he would rescue Anambra State from mediocrity.
The defectors were received by Hon. Nonso Okafor, a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Nnewi North and the former APC candidate for the Nnewi North, South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency.
Hon. Okafor, who serves as the Nnewi North LGA coordinator for the Sir Paul Chukwuma Primary Campaign Council, welcomed the new members alongside the Nnewi North LGA Chairman of the APC, Prince Innocent Orizu. Several APC stakeholders and ward chairmen were also present to receive the defectors.
