Wife of Last Traditional Ruler of Nsukka Passes at 105

The Obayi Atta family of Nguru, Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, has announced the death of their matriarch, Nnemuruoha Lolo Cecelia Ovute Obayi (nee Omeje), who passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025, at the age of 105.

The late Cecelia Obayi was the wife of HRH Patrick Obayi, the Onogwu Atta IV and Ezeora I of Nsukka, the last traditional ruler of Nsukka before the creation of autonomous communities. She was a notable community leader dedicated to education, women’s empowerment, and the welfare of the vulnerable.

She trained her children as teachers, believing in education as a tool for community advancement, and mobilized women to complete projects like the Catholic Church in Nguru Nsukka.

She is survived by six children, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and relatives, including HRH Igwe Linus Nosike Obayi, the traditional ruler of Nguru Nsukka, and Hon. Barrister Ethelbert Obayi, a former Enugu State House of Assembly member.

In a statement, her son, Igwe Linus Obayi, described her as a devout Catholic, a paragon of royal grace, and an exemplary community servant. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
