Senator John Azuta-Mbata from Rivers State has been elected as the 13th President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
The election took place in Enugu on Friday, with Azuta-Mbata emerging as the consensus candidate following a meeting of the Ohanaeze General Assembly.
The announcement of his victory was made by Chief Ejiofor Onyia, the chairman of the Ohanaeze electoral committee, after the dissolution of the previous executive committee, which had been led by Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu.
A motion for a consensus election was introduced by Senator Chris Ngige and seconded by Chief Enwo Igariwey.
Alongside Azuta-Mbata, other key executive members elected include Emeka Siebudu as National Secretary General, Okey Nwadinobi as Deputy President General, Peter Aneke as National Treasurer, Ezechukwu Ezechi as National Publicity Secretary, and Okeagu Oguada as National Legal Adviser, among others.
The Southeast governors present at the event reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Ohanaeze Ndigbo to align with the original vision of the organization’s founders.
Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, who chairs the Southeast Governors Forum, emphasized that the leadership of Ohanaeze must be entrusted to individuals with proven track records and the capacity to foster unity within the Igbo community.
In his acceptance speech, Azuta-Mbata expressed gratitude to the delegates for entrusting him with the responsibility of President General.
He assured them that under his leadership, Ohanaeze would work toward elevating the status of the Igbo people, ensuring they take their rightful place in Nigeria’s national affairs.
“I thank you for the trust you have placed in me. I am committed to working with a dedicated team to serve our people,” Azuta-Mbata said.
“Together, and with the support of our governors and leaders, we will uphold the values of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and work towards making Ndigbo proud once again.”
