President Bola Tinubu has advised candidates who are unhappy with the outcome of the recently concluded Edo State governorship election to channel their grievances through the courts.
This statement follows the announcement of Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as the winner of Saturday’s election.
In a press release by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu extended his congratulations to Okpebholo, whose victory was officially declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday.
“The President encourages those dissatisfied with the election results to seek redress through legal procedures,” the statement read.
Tinubu lauded the efforts of APC national and state leaders, as well as party governors, for their role in securing the victory. He described the win as an endorsement of the party’s vision, its economic reforms, and commitment to bettering the lives of Nigerians.
The President urged Okpebholo to be humble in his triumph, advising him to view the victory as an opportunity to serve the people. He also called on him to extend an olive branch to his political opponents and foster unity among Edo’s citizens to promote development.
In his remarks, Tinubu also commended the other candidates who participated in the election, acknowledging their roles in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process. He noted that peaceful political contests, like the one in Edo, are essential in showcasing the country’s growing democratic stability.
He praised the people of Edo State for their calm and orderly conduct throughout the electoral process, emphasizing Nigeria’s progress in democratic governance after 25 years.
“I also commend INEC and the security agencies for their dedication in ensuring a peaceful and largely smooth election,” Tinubu said, reaffirming his belief in INEC’s commitment to free and fair elections.
