In a devastating act of violence, unknown gunmen stormed a family home in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, executing seven members, including three children, in a planned and brutal killing.
The massacre took place late Wednesday in the Highflats area, approximately 80 kilometers from Durban, and has left the nation reeling.
Among the victims was a five-year-old boy, with the eldest being a 55-year-old woman, police revealed.
Provincial police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi described the horrific scene, stating that many of the victims were shot in the head while lying on the floor.
“We are convinced this was an execution. It was a premeditated murder,” he said. A total of 25 bullets were used in the attack.
The gunmen reportedly forced one family member, who was outside the house, to knock on the door.
As soon as the door was opened, they stormed in, unleashing gunfire on the unsuspecting family, who were watching television.
South Africa, grappling with one of the highest homicide rates globally, has been shocked by the tragedy.
Police statistics reveal that between April and June alone, nearly 6,200 people were murdered in the country.
