A clash between operatives of the Ebonyi State Police Command and gunmen alleged to be supporters of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the Ebonyi Local Government Area has resulted in the deaths of at least five of the fighters.
The incident happened late Wednesday when the gunmen reportedly stormed Ishieke police station in a blue Sienna bus, initiating a gunfire exchange around 9:30 pm.
According to reports, the gunmen engaged in a fierce 30-minute gun battle with the police before reinforcements arrived from the state police headquarters in Abakiliki and the military.
Police vehicles were set ablaze during the confrontation, which also prompted local residents to flee for safety.
Video footage circulating on social media depicted the aftermath, showing the bodies of the assailants.
A reliable source described how the initial shootout compelled security forces to mobilise swiftly to the scene.
The clash escalated as the gunmen attempted to flee towards Odomoke Ishieke market, only to be intercepted and subdued by advancing security personnel.
As of the latest update, authorities have not officially commented on the incident.
However, the Sienna bus used by the attackers and the deceased bodies had been transported to the state police headquarters for further investigation.
