Chief Chidi Obetta, Member, representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency of Enugu State in House of Representatives has pledged to execute over 90 projects in the constituency.
Obetta disclosed this in Nsukka on Sunday during the Maiden Town Hall Meeting, he organised for the people of the constituency held at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, (UNN)
The lawmaker who was elected on the platform of Labour Party (LP) in 2023 general elections said that, he identified the projects during his needs assessment visits to 36 wards in the constituency.
The lawmaker explained that having known the pressing needs of each ward he had already started initiating plans and measures to tackle them.
“As the representative of the people, It is my firm desire to live up to the huge expectations of his people by utilising the mandate given to me deliver quality and effective representation.
“During my needs assessment tour to the 36 wards of the constituency i discovered from their presentations over 90 different developmental projects yearning for attention.
“Such needs include; installation of boreholes, provision of solar street lights, construction of access roads, construction of classroom blocks, civic centres, youths and women empowerments programmes, among others.
“I will work very hard to ensure these needs of my people are addressed through government interventions, constituency projects, legislative contacts and connections.” he said.
Obetta who is Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Legislative Budget & Research explained that, the meeting would offer him good opportunity to interact and interface with constituents so that everybody would be carried along.
“Town hall meetings is a veritable tool for constituent’s engagement and the benefits are immeasurable in democracy,” he said.
Obetta noted that through his motion in the floor of the House that, the Gully Erosion in Alor-Uno Community was currently receiving urgent attention from the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria (NEMA).
The lawmaker had earlier in the day opened two constituency offices in the Nsukka and Igbo-Eze South local government areas.
Obetta during the town hall meeting inaugurated 36 legislative aids, one from each ward under the constituency, as well as setup 5-Man board of trustees of his “Chidi Obetta Foundation.”
Speaking on behalf of traditional rulers, His Royal Highness, Igwe Ugwe Ikechukwu Oke, Chairman Igbo-Eze South Council of Traditional Rulers, commended the lawmaker for the first town hall meeting in less than five months after his inauguration on June 13.
He said that thee meeting was an eloquent testimony that Obetta was committed to provide quality and effective representation for Nsukka/Igbo-Eze Southl constituency.
“On behalf of the traditional rulers and our people in this constituency, I commend Obetta for this good beginning, as well as his visit to our various communities to ascertain their needs,
“We pledge to give you our maximum support to enable you to realise your good vision for the constituency,” he said.
In a remark, Prof Damian Opata, a Professor Emeritus in UNN and a stakeholder in the constituency said that the town hall meeting was a good step in a good direction.
Also in a remark, Prof Charles Igwe, the Vice-chancellor of UNN, represented by Prof. Pat Okpoko, Deputy VC Administration applauded Obetta’s commitment to give the constituency effective representation and pledged that the university would assist Obetta anytime the need arises.
Speaking, Bishop Godfrey Onah of Nsukka Catholic Diocese who was represented by Rev. Fr. Matthew Ezea, Director, Justice Development Peace Caritas Commission of the Diocese expressed happiness that the lawmaker had started immediately to implement his campaign promises to the people.
Our correspondent reports that, the event was well attended by politicians, captains of industries, religious leaders, traditional rulers, market men and women, town union presidents, youth leaders, among others.
Chief Chijioke Edeoga, Governorship Candidate of Labour Party in 2023 general election in Enugu State, Sen. Okey Ezea, representing Enugu North Senatorial District in Senate, were among dignitaries present during the town hall meeting .
