The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Mrs Favour Ugwuanyi, made the call in a message to commemorate the 2023 International Day of the Girl-Child on Wednesday in Enugu.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the day is a global observance dedicated to highlighting the challenges faced by girls around the world and promoting their empowerment, education and rights.
The day is annually marked on Oct. 11 to underscore the pivotal role of girls in the society when nurtured and empowered to break boundaries.
Emphasising the importance of the day, Ugwuanyi stressed the need to address gender inequalities, discrimination and violence against Nigerian and other African girls to create a brighter future for them.
Ugwuanyi, a former Chairman, Post Primary School Management Board Enugu, said the day is a reminder for everyone to ensure that girls get opportunities like their male counterparts.
According to her, it recognises the significance, power, and potential of the adolescent girl by advocating for increased opportunities for them.
“The day also seeks to address the gender-based challenges that girls face worldwide, including issues such as child marriage, limited access to education, violence, and discrimination,” she said.
She urged African leaders and parents to ensure that girls’ rights were well protected and opportunities created to empower them, as well as bring an end to gender inequalities.
She said “on behalf of the entire management team of FAN Foundation, we extend our warm wishes to young women on this auspicious International Day of the Girl Child.
“May God grant families the wisdom and means to provide a brighter future for their daughters,” she prayed.
FAN Foundation is a Non-Government Organisation that empowers families and youths by offering counselling,
scholarships, financial aid and skill training, especially to youths and women.
